New GIG

*We have paid the deposit on a new gig to be built in Looe by Dave Currah– to be delivered end of next summer

– might need to hang this from the ceiling in the boathouse!

*Our life jackets are worse for considerable wear and we have been fortunate enough to get sponsorship for two new sets from Richard Newman of ‘Starfish’ and fisherman Chris Newman – many thanks to these two kind folk.

CPGA Chairman's Cup

In addition to winning the Cornwall Sports Partnership "Club of the Year" award in November, the Club was been presented at the AGM of the CPGA with theChairman's Cup for "Club of the Year".

This Cup is awarded by the President of the CPGA to the most outstanding Club in the past year, and recognises the work put in and the achievements of the Juniors Section, as well as the wider development of the Club and the efforts in getting the new boathouse.

Well done to all.

Celebrity Row

*Some of you will have seen the article in Cornish Guardian about the ‘Celebrity Row’ – we have agreed to loan Ryder to a team proposing to row from John O’Groats to Lands End in June next year – coxed by some well know folk -Austin Healey, Martin Johnson, Willie Thorne etc.  This project is being ‘sorted’ by a former club member – Paul Bassett – and it is the intention to come to Looe to test the sea water! A wonderful opportunity for the town, promoting Looe Rowing Club and gig rowing.  Do keep an eye on their web site – www.celebrityrow.co.uk ,we will keep you informed of dates, when they have been finalised. The Club has promised to help out with coaching and support whilst they are doing the row, as well as pre-event training of their rowers and coxes.

Clubmark

Earlier this summer we passed the assessment for the prestigious SportEngland award –“ Clubmark” which recognises clubs in all sports who have made a real contribution to quality youth training and support.  Looe is one of the growing number of rowing clubs in Cornwall to achieve this award – the assessment process is fraught, but worthwhile!  Well done to all those key members of the club who work so hard with the junior squads and encourage young people to try our sport – we could also not have done this without the support and expertise of Rhiannon Halliday- on loan to us from the ARA

THANK YOU RHIANNON!!

Other Clubs to have received the award over the past few months are

Caradon, Cattewater, Charlestown, Fowey and Plymouth.

Official Opening of our New Gig Boathouse

( Not a Shed ! )

21st March 2009

Over 200 people turned up on a beautiful sunny day to see the official opening

of the new gig boat house by Mayor of Looe, Ron Overd.

Buffet lunch followed in the sailing club, whilst visiting gig clubs prepared to row round Looe Island.  The ladies race was won by Rock and the men’s race by our own team.

We hope to make the Round the Island race an annual event.
